Understanding, Balancing and Taming Cognitive Load in Instructional Design

Learning is like crafting a sandwich masterpiece.

The Components of Cognitive Load

Intrinsic Load: The Essential Fillings

You've got the bread, the fillings, and the condiments. These core elements—the meat, cheese, and veggies—are the intrinsic load, or the essential information learners need to understand. But what if you piled on every ingredient in sight? With too much filling, the sandwich spills out and overwhelms you just as an excessive intrinsic load can overwhelm learners' brains.

Extrinsic Load: The Presentation and Packaging

Extrinsic load is when you are trying to eat a sandwich with layers falling all over the place. It's the extra "stuff" around the core content—like complex visuals, long paragraphs, or unclear instructions—like too many toppings, can make it hard to focus on the main ingredients.

Crafting the Perfect Learning Experience

Chunking
Just as how you layer your sandwich, break content into manageable pieces.
Visual Appeal
Add relevant images to clarify concepts, but remember, don't drown your sandwich in sauce.
Interactive Bites
Include activities that let learners savor, enjoy, and interact with the content.
Real-world Scenarios
Integrate relatable examples, like adding a favorite ingredient, to help learners connect the new knowledge they are feasting on to their existing experiences and mental schemas.

The Significance of Balance:

Efficiency

By managing intrinsic load, you ensure learners focus on the main ingredients without feeling swamped.

Clarity

Taming extrinsic load means presenting the content in a way that's clear, concise, and visually appealing.

Engagement

Striking the right balance of germane load encourages active processing, aiding in better understanding and retention.

Like the art of sandwich-making, Instructional Design hinges on balance. It's about preventing cognitive overload, so a learner enjoys the tasty learning journey. When we understand and manage intrinsic, extrinsic, and germane load, we create learning experiences that leave learners satisfied, receptive, and craving for more. As we layer our instructional designs—much like the perfectly crafted sandwich—we end up creating a harmonious blend that engages learners effectively.
